Great lakes RV travel

{I know, this picture looks like the ocean, but I assure you it’s not. The Great Lakes are actually ‘inland seas’ and they really are that big!!}

HOMES. That’s how kids in Michigan learn the names of the five Great Lakes. HOMES – Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior. Growing up in Michigan, I spent my summers on four of the five and it was magical. It’s where my heart is. Each lake holds special memories: Lake Michigan and its warm, sandy beaches, Lake Huron for forays into Canada with my family, Lake Superior for its raw power, Lake Erie screams Cedar Pointe to me, and Lake Ontario, our last to visit, for the year we spent living in western New York, near Niagara Falls and the Erie Canal.

We live in northern Minnesota now, but whenever I see Lake Superior it feels like … home. The Great Lakes are just so special. If you haven’t traveled to see one or all of the Great Lakes, add that trip to your bucket list today! You won’t be disappointed.

I wrote a detailed travel guide for each lake. You can access them all here.

Lake Huron

Nestled between the United States and Canada, Lake Huron’s expanse of sparkling waters and picturesque landscapes invites travelers to explore its tranquil shores and discover the rich cultural heritage of its surroundings.

Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario boasts of having both Canada’s largest city, Toronto, and the world’s largest waterfall (by volume), Niagara Falls, on its shores, but there is so much more to see and do on this beautiful lake.

Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan has over 300 miles of sandy shoreline. It would take you a lifetime of summers to enjoy every beach it has to offer, but you could sure try.

Lake Erie

Lake Erie may be the shallowest Great Lake, but it’s still pretty dang awesome. Between Put-in-Bay and Cedar Pointe, there is so much fun to be had on its shores.

Lake Superior

Fierce. Rugged. Powerful. These are just a few adjectives that come to mind when I picture Lake Superior. It is truly a sight to behold.
